Double Cleansing: The Importance of Double Cleansing and How to Effectively Cleanse the Skin
Good skincare starts with clean skin. Removing makeup, impurities, and oil leaves the skin feeling fresh and ready for the next steps of the skincare routine. Cleansing the skin improperly or entirely skipping this step is damaging to the skin barrier function and limits the rest of the products in the regimen from performing effectively.
Using gentle cleansers with lukewarm water twice a day and taking a few extra minutes to break down the pollution residue can make a world of difference and help maintain healthy skin.
What is Double Cleansing?
Double cleansing is a technique that first became popular in South Korea and Japan before moving into Western culture and involves using two different types of cleansers, one followed by the other. The idea behind double cleansing is to ensure thorough yet gentle cleanse without the risk of overwashing the face. The first step aims to draw out makeup, and sunscreen while the second step removes pollutants like sweat, grime, dirts, oils, and excess dead skin cells lurking in the pores.
Benefits from Double Cleansing
A long and busy day often includes wearing makeup and sunscreen, experiencing the effects of UV and pollution exposure, and facing the build-up of excess oil, dirt, and dead skin cells. All this can lead to clogged pores and breakouts, visible signs of ageing, and compromised skin barrier. The first cleanse will break down all the makeup and dirt, leaving the skin clean. The second cleanse works its way deeper into the pores and addresses the particular skin type and skin concerns, this allows the active ingredients of the cleanser to provide more benefits to the skin and allows other ingredients used in your routine to absorb more effectively.
Double cleansing can also help people with very oily skin to remove excess oil without stripping or drying the skin out. Oily skin types tend to use one harsh cleanser, assuming it would tackle the excess sebum production but that leads to tight and uncomfortable-feeling skin with increased oil production. In this case, a gentle cleansing formula free from harsh chemicals and surfactants are much better in balancing out the skin’s natural oils and rebuilding the barrier.
The double cleansing technique also brightens the skin, lifts the complexion, and allows all leave-on products, such as serums and moisturisers penetrate the skin better and work more efficiently.

How to Double Cleanse?
- Dispense cleanser to your palm and use your fingers to gently massage it into wet or dry skin using circular motions, including the area around the eyes, for about a minute.
- Enhance the effect of the cleanser by using a soft washcloth for gentle exfoliation. Using both sides of the cleansing cloth, lightly wipe away the impurities without tugging the skin.
- Rinse the cleanser with lukewarm water or with a clean cloth, soaked in warm water.
- Dispense a small amount of a gentle cream, gel, or lotion facial cleanser and apply to damp skin, gently massaging it in circular motions.
- Rinse with lukewarm water and pat dry with a soft towel.
